AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON – WHAT THE CRITICS SAY
‘Exuberant, funny, silly and crazily exhilarating. It’s a superhero cavalcade of energy and fun’ – Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
‘The action is turbocharged from the start, with a forest battle reminding those who lack a PhD in Marvel comic studies of the characters’ powers’ Kate Muir, The Times
‘Whedon brings a depth and wit to his storytelling that you will never find in a Transformers movie. Even so, the final showdown is a little anti-climactic’ – Geoffrey McNab, The Independent
‘It’s a thrilling but occasionally exhausting experience that threatens to overload the sense. Still as you’d expect, the effects are dazzling, particularly when seen through 3D glasses’ – David Edwards, The Mirror
‘Joss Whedon’s film gives you that same pop-culture sugar rush, stacking characters, conflicts, subplots and background treats like tiers of wedding cake – far more than you’d think you could possibly cram into a little under two and a half hours without the whole thing crumbling under the weight of its own calorie count’ – Robbie Collin, The Daily Telegraph
‘It’s a fun film, and like all Marvel cinematic universe films it’s never less than passable – but it’s sitting in the shadow of a predecessor that was always so much more than just okay’ – James Hunt, Den Of Geek
‘Because of all of the high points, it’s easy to forgive the film’s flaws. It’s too busy. The number of characters means that none of them get a real chance to shine’ Oliver Franklin-Wallis, Wired
‘There’s more than enough here to wow a summer blockbuster audience but you get the feeling Whedon is leaving the Avengers movies at just the right time’ – Andy Lea, The Daily Star
Old school style: (L-R) Mark Ruffalo looked a world away from his Hulk character in a navy suit, English actor Paul Bettany went for a more traditional look in a brown three-piece suit, while writer and director Joss Whedon kept it casual in trainers
On the promo trail: The premiere came hours after a press conference attended by the cast
‘I’m looking for [scripts] as an actor looking for material that’s substantial, not a female actor looking for substantial work,’ Scarlett told MailOnline at a press conference at the Corinthia Hotel.
‘What’s great about playing this character is that she’s based in something deep and something that I can hold onto.
‘She’s grounded and very real; she has experienced a lot of trauma and never been able to make active choices for herself and now she finally is, and she’s ready for it but unfortunately, it’s bad timing.’

Scarlett – who became a first time mum after the birth of her daughter Rose last September – tells MailOnline that because of the depth of her character, it makes shooting these major movies so much more worth it.
‘These types of things are something we can hold onto and when we’re fighting the good fight and shooting five days to the page over two weeks it keeps us involved and keeps our heads straight,’ Johansson says.
